We no longer tolerate governments that do not build hospitals!

Cancer continues to take its toll, while medical system solutions in many EU countries leave much to be desired. Too few concrete steps have been taken to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families.

The European Union must become a global leader in medical innovation, revolutionary treatments, effective, non-invasive and accessible screening methods in hospitals dedicated to the specificity of this disease, palliative care centers and support for survivors.

Strasbourg: Vote on the report of the proposal for a directive of the European Parliament and of the Council amending Directive 2004/37/EC on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to carcinogens or mutagens at work – Speech by MEP Renew Vlad Gheorghe (17.02.2022)

Cancer is a pandemic with no waves or restrictions, no masks or gloves can protect us. Those who work in the first lines – nurses, firefighters, delivery people, those who disinfect offices, schools, and hospitals – are more exposed than us all to carcinogens and mutagens. There are 13 million European employees in daily contact with dangerous substances.

Cancer is the leading cause of occupational death in the EU. There are 100 000 new cases and 80 000 deaths every year. These are people, not numbers. They leave orphans behind, families, friends, a missing place in the labor market and their community. I don’t believe there is anyone here who hasn’t lost a loved one to this relentless disease.

But more than 40% of cancers can be prevented. We can and must do more. I ask you now to please support this proposal for a European directive. Please support the European Cancer Plan. Regardless of your political color, I ask you to support any measure taken in your country of origin to prevent, fight and alleviate the suffering caused by cancer and other serious diseases.
