Assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia and the rule of law in Malta (debate) –  Renew Vlad Gheorghe’s European Parliament speech on how corruption threatens the future of the European Union (25.03.2021).

Corruption makes Member States and the entire Union more vulnerable. It is a constant threat to the rule of law and security, it has huge costs, it limits press freedom and discourages whistle-blowers, it deepens social conflicts and fuels extremism.

The crime against the Maltese journalist cannot go unpunished. The resolution must send a strong message against corruption and organized crime. The free press and investigative journalists need to know that they are supported and protected.

Judicial cooperation is essential – the European Public Prosecutor’s Office must start work urgently, despite those who still oppose it.

Corruption is an obstacle to progress and prosperity – as a Romanian lawyer I know this all too well. I ask you all to stand united against those corrupted who trespass the fundamental rights and values of the European family. We can and we must eliminate corruption in Europe in order to be strong together.
